Theatrical Interpreting

Interpreting a theatrical performance is more than simply translating a script into sign language. Theatrical interpreters strive to retain the flavor of the original work, incorporating the director’s vision and the actors’ characterizations into an equivalent artistic offering for Deaf and hard of hearing audiences. In collaboration with area theatres, Illuminations Arts has interpreted works from Albee to Shakespeare, delighting Houston audiences with the opportunity to experience quality theatre through American Sign Language.  Illuminations Arts has worked with a variety of area theatres; including the Tony-award winning Alley Theatre, A. D. Players, Express Children’s Theatre and many more to provide accessible theatre for all.

An exciting new variety of theatrical interpreting is called Shadow Interpreting. This pairs a speaking actor with an actor who portrays the same character through sign language. The performers work as a team, creating 2 sides of the same character through their lines, blocking and interaction on stage.
